Creativity has always been an integral part of my yoga journey, beginning with attending teacher training. When I first moved to Oklahoma I searched for a few months to find a job in the social work/ mental health career field. I quickly became discouraged and doubtful. After contemplating going to yoga teacher training, my husband signed me up before I was even certain the program was for me. Thank goodness he did! It was the best thing I could have done at that time in my life. After becoming a yoga teacher, I was able to create my own schedule. I contracted with local gyms and planned new and exciting programs, retreats, and classes. Above all, yoga was a creative way for me to build community.
Having moved from Oklahoma, I’ve had to get creative again and utilize technology to create connections. Admittedly, while it’s not as fun as teaching person, it’s such a wonderful feeling to know that I get to do yoga with you all over the country. This part of my journey has challenged me to look at the way I teach in new an unusual ways. Recently, I’ve started to teach yoga to kids with different mental health disorders and it has been such a rewarding experience. I have to think about the way I give a cue in order to help the kids understand as well as stay invested and engaged. Let me tell you, this is no easy task! They are some of my toughest critics.
Currently, one of my favorite ways to creatively interact with yoga is through pictures. I feel most creative and inspired in nature, surrounded by God’s creativity. My sister-in-law came to visit a month ago and she helped me explore our surroundings in a way that lead to natural expression and creativity. She took all of the pictures on this blog! Isn’t she awesome?
Let me close by saying, we all poses unique, qualities that are gifted to us and distinguish us from every other person in this world. What makes you creative? When do you feel free to express that creativity? What sparks your JOY? In a sea of uniformity, let’s strive to be creative, unique individuals: the very best version of YOU!
